Our economic plight could be ironically foretold by the lowly 1-cent piece. It has become more expensive to produce than its worth. The U.S. mint now spends about 1.2 cents to make one. This reminds me of the present-day hoax around ethanol as a fuel, in that it takes 1.2 units of energy to produce 1 unit back, insane. Ooops, off-topic there, sorry. The nickel cost about 7.5 cents each to produce.

Here’s the jump to a reference: Coins cost more to make than they are worth

I propose that the entire economy is in this same situation. If you add up all the real costs of making 1 dollar properly and legally, you would find it cost more to make than its worth in many situations and circumstances. And more and more people are finding themselves in these situations and circumstances every day.

Many people go to work everyday and every week, day in day out, just like they’ve done for years. Suddenly one week, they come home at the end of the week and find that they can’t pay all their bills anymore.
Medical, property, personal insurance. Medical, property, personal taxes. Housing, food, transportation, clothing, and medical care; yes medical care because most people who have medical insurance and pay medical taxes, still will have to pay considerable if they actually seek medical care.

You may consider yourself above all this in your current situation, but it is debt being accumulated that gives you this illusion. This debt will ultimately come due, and is already more than the nation’s worth. Look at the numbers yourself, the more “economic activity” we have, the more the debt grows.

The lowly penny asks: At what point do you abandon me entirely? Even if you change me to steel or even pot-metal, the cost keeps going up. Soon it will cost more to haul a load of me to the bank than I’m worth.

Let’s see now, there’s 100 pennies in 1 dollar, that means that for the dollar the problem is a hundred-fold. And so on and so on … ad infinitum. So it appears that we are running a 20% deficit on everything we do. I know, it is insane.

It is not the penny we need to change, it is its worth that needs changing. “Change this penny” should mean you want 2 coins back for it.
