“WASHINGTON — The Senate on Tuesday passed a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s food-safety system, after recalls of tainted eggs, peanut butter and spinach that sickened thousands and led major food makers to join consumer advocates in demanding stronger government oversight. “

It has always amazed me that the gov couldn’t force a company to recall poison food like they can cars and toys and such. Now such force can be exerted on the non-cooperating, as the new law would make possible. Hmmn, seems a good idea to have more people keeping an eye on the food we all consume. Apparently the two Senators from Mississippi didn’t think so, both voted against the measure.

Here’s the jump: Senate Passes Overhaul of Food Safety Regulations

Update: “Officials from Minnesota’s departments of agriculture and health said they were issuing a product advisory for King Nut brand creamy peanut butter after finding the Salmonella typhimurium bacteria in a big institutional-size jar.”

An outbreak of salmonella food poisoning has made 388 people sick across 42 states, sending 18 percent of them to the hospital, U.S. health officials said on Wednesday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is trying to trace the source of the outbreak, which began in September. The Department of Agriculture, state health officials and the Food and Drug Administration are also involved.

The CDC said poultry, cheese and eggs are the most common source of this particular strain, known as Salmonella typhimurium.
