A truly horrid tale of rampant corruption in today’s health care industry. Not from some small-time shyster doctor, or under-handed veterinarian, or even the drug pinching nurse; but from one of the top drug-makers in the US, Pfizer(set to be world’s largest by year-end). It is much the classic tale of large corporations running amuck and unchecked by government control for the past decade in America.

It is interesting that “criminal” is specified, and one would conclude that maybe someone will go to jail. No mention in the article of this or any facts surrounding any harm that was caused by all this to actual people. Yes, yes, the “fine” money will be paid and divvied-up amongst all the parties and everything will be nice and clean.

National Hero: Your Health Insurance Salesman?

The tea partiers have raised the status of the lowly insurance salesman to historic new heights. Hell, I almost want to go back into that business myself. I wonder if a Health History Authorization form can get you chicks now-a-days. Yeah, flash one of those around and they come a running. And man, show them a life expectancy table and you’d have to beat them off with a stick.

I wonder if families, expecting a call from the Insurance Salesman Hero, break out the best China and Silverware, don the Sunday dudes and roll out the red carpet. I mean, “This guy can get us some of that rip-off, underpaying, over-priced, sorry that isn’t covered, health insurance!”, it’s a special day in our lives. Maybe we should name the next born after him.

Sardines and Pumpkin Seeds

Doesn’t sound like something I would normally consume, but now that I think about it a bit, it sounds fairly appetizing. Can’t say that I’ve eaten many pumpkin seeds in my days, but my dad used to feed me sardines and crackers on every fishing trip we went on. Over time I came to like them. I never gave any thought about the health benefits of them though. According to an article over at the NY Times, “They are high in omega-3’s, contain virtually no mercury and are loaded with calcium. They also contain iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper and manganese as well as a full complement of B vitamins.” Yep, good stuff there.

The article goes on to cover 11 foods not normally eaten by many folks and also some of the benefits from consuming them.

Mississippi Nursing Homes Rated

The CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) has issued quality ratings for 15,800 nursing homes throughout the USA that participate in Medicare or Medicaid. Each nursing home is assigned a star rating, from one to five – with five being the best. The ratings are based on health inspection surveys, staffing information, and quality of care measures.

Some for-profit nursing homes do not provide the same quality of care as non-profit homes. An analysis of the data found 19% of non-profit nursing homes got five stars, compared to 9% of for-profit facilities. The ratings were based on inspection records, complaint investigations and quality measures.

Mississippi
23.2% of all nursing homes have a 1-star ranking
13.3% of all nursing homes have a 5-star ranking
