One of the original search services on the net has certainly seen better days as its share of the search pie has dropped to below 16% in recent times. Who knows? Maybe with a shiny new skin and some code tweaks the old gal might make the comeback. Good Luck old friend.

I hear that the new Firefox 4 will be available on the net sometimes today, 3/22/11. I’ll post the link when I see it come up. They claim it is much faster than your old version3. But to me, the big news is the support for the ratified but still unimplemented HTML5 and support for new web video format WebM, to replace the often disliked Flash format.

On the other side of the isle, I hear rumor that Internet Explorer 9 will be in an upcoming automatic Windows Update.

One Trillion Devices Connected to Internet

According to the online dictionary a trillion is: the number represented as one followed by twelve zeros (10¹²); a million million. Now Cisco Systems, the guys that make the machines that make the internet run, is saying that in the year 2013 there will be 1 trillion devices connected to the global internet. Hmmmn, let’s see now, Google World says there will be about 7 Billion (billion=thousand million) inhabitants on the planet in 2013; so that’s about 140 devices per man, woman, and child on the planet.

I’m just sitting here thinking, where am I going to keep all these things, and how in the hell am I ever going to keep them all charged up?

There’s been much hoopla lately about new Net Neutrality Rules proposed by the new FCC. All in all, it is at least a step in the positive direction. But like all laws or rules, there seems to be some lobbyist stink on this one as brought to light by some pretty bright guys at Yale, Harvard, Columbia, etc.

Microsoft have quickly polished up their new browser software and have begun pushing it out as a critical update to most versions of Windows. So its coming to a computer near you real soon. What with all the new threats out there and some recent “high-profile” security snafus (foxnews.com), they haven’t even waited til the shiny wears off old number 7.

Yep the guys at Redmond have been busy as little beavers in the past month, as this comes right on the heels of a quite large (260mb) Windows core update in the past couple of weeks.

Let’s keep those machines updated folks!

Why does this not surprise me? Personally I don’t need any excuse or warning to stay far away from this sort of twisted journalism. If you’ve had the misfortune to be lured to their sleazy site, you might want to read this article over at the Security Forum on broadbandreports.com.

One of our more skilled scambusters and "malvertising" gurus has further dissected (with photos) the exact scumware delivery mechanism at work here — and notes that users don’t even need to click on an ad banner at the website in order to get infected. The vsm_free_setup.exe forced download the ads are instituting originates from Russia or the Ukraine, and appears to involve a keylogger.

I have been avoiding this site like the plague since I spent over 20 hours removing from a users computer a mal-formed cookie from this site that caused Internet Explorer to refuse to open any links. To make matters worse, this user had foxnews set as their homepage. And now, a couple of months later, and this episode. Congratulations FoxNews.com you have made your way onto this System Administrator’s ban list.

Mozilla to kill FireFox?

“Firefox 3 still has that new browser smell, but that’s not stopping the Mozilla Foundation from planning ahead for its next major move. The organization on Wednesday unveiled Aurora, a concept video touting the future of Web browsing.

“Aurora incorporates many innovative design ideas [that] are nuanced, and build on each other in complex ways, so we’ve used each part of the video to show how the concepts work together in specific situations,” the company said.

From a New Zealand web site, a good story about one of the benefits of the Internet to rural areas. Some good lessons to be learned from those New Zealanders who have been dealing with high fuel prices for quite some time.

“The price of petrol is driving people in rural areas to use the internet rather than their cars, says rural broadband provider Farmside.As petrol prices jumped weekly in April, inquires about rural broadband nearly doubled, says Nick Carter, sales and marketing director of the Timaru firm. The trend has continued this month, he says. “Many of our new customers are citing rising fuel costs as one of the main reasons for getting satellite or wireless broadband.”
